Cement Tile Designs: The Possibilities Are Endless

1

Which of the three cement tile designs above do you like best?  Whichever one you said — left, right or center — here’s a secret: they’re all made with the same concrete tile!

Like the perfect black dress, the beauty of our cement tile designs is their ability to morph from classic to casual to modern or traditional depending on which way they’re oriented.  Using the same encaustic tile you can lay a floor (or a wall or a backsplash) in a myriad of different designs.  For example, instead of using a pile of different cement tiles to create the patchwork tile designs that are popular right now, you can use the same tile, laid slightly differently across your space, to conjure up a tile pattern that, while still emulating this trend, might feel a little more zen in your moderately-sized, real world home.

With this fact in mind, you can also create a tile design with a beautiful border, a central focal point or, using the same cement tile laid in a different directions, create different, yet still coherent patterns throughout your home.

To get a similar look in your home to any of the tile designs above, use our Burgos concrete tile from our Echo Collection and custom order the concrete tile in white, black and silver.

In The News: Granada Tile In Afar Magazine Spotlights Our Fez Cement Tile

Afar mag cover Oct 2014

Barbara Bestor and Granada Tiles go together like hamburgers and french fries, Paris and romance, black and white.  Or in our case, blue and white cement tiles.  Fez cement tiles that is.  Seven years later and our Fez concrete tile in the Barbara Bestor-designed Silver Lake Intelligensia coffee shop is still going strong, still drawing as many oohs and aahs as it did on opening day.  So we’re extra-flattered to be included in this profile of Barbara in Afar Magazine.  We’ll take a more in-depth look at Barbara’s work in an upcoming post but for now we just wanted to spread the Bestor love.

5 Things To Do With Your Sample Cement Tiles

tilepathway

When you’re creating cement tile in a custom colorway to put a unique spin on your project, you’ll want to order a sample to ensure that the concrete tile you imagine is the concrete tile that you’ll get.  Of course, once you’ve made your decision and ordered a full set of cement tiles for your project, what should you do with your encaustic tile samples?  If you’re lucky, you’ll only have one cement tile sample and you can add it to your project or keep it in case you need to replace a cement tile sometime in the future.  But, if you’re like many of us, who might order a few concrete tile samples, unsure if we prefer Fez cement tiles in blue and white or black and white or green and white or brown and white, you’ll have a handful of single encaustic tiles without a home.  Before you toss them in the garbage or donate them, here are 5 ideas for how to reuse your encaustic tiles:

  • Save them to use them for a patchwork project:  Patchwork, a hodge-podge of color and pattern is having a moment in the design world.  Use your imagination to create a kaleidoscope of design.
  • Use them as coasters or trivets for your holiday table:  Use your sample tiles as makeshift trivets or coasters to hold hot plates of food or drinks and prevent hot spots and water rings from forming on your polished wood furniture.  A coating of Envirotex Lite Pour-on High Gloss resin will ensure that they’re wine, coffee and tea stain-proof.  And we’d suggest that you glue felt or cork onto the bottom of your tiles  so that the rough underside doesn’t scratch your table top.
  • Create a tile table:  That standby of the 80s is still a garden favorite and it works just as well inside too!  Cover an old metal-framed or sturdy wood table with tiles.  Find instructions here.  If you’ve got some patience and DIY skills, you can create a mosaic style top (you’ll need to break your tiles into pieces for this one though!)
  • Create a pathway in your garden:  Tiptoe through the tulips using your tiles as stepping stones or lay them down to create a “floor” for one of the “rooms” in your garden.  You can use them whole or break them up and intersperse them with other stones.
  • Use them as paperweights:  Keep bills and important papers from flying away by anchoring the stack with single beautiful tile (added bonus:  when you put your coffee cup down, it won’t create a ring on your bills!)

What are some of the creative ways you’ve found to use your sample Granada tiles? Send us photographs; we’d love to see them!

In The News: Architect (and Cement Tile lover) Barbara Bestor speaks at Creative Mornings

BBestorCM1BBestorCM2

Architect Barbara Bestor, profiled in our previous post, recently spoke at LA’s Creative Mornings, a monthly free breakfast lecture series (there’s probably one taking place this month in your city!).  Watch for her discussion about the design for Intelligensia’s Silver Lake outpost (that’s a shot of it, featuring our Fez cement tile) manifests her belief that “everyone should experience strange beauty every day”.  It takes place starting at about 1:10 (though if you have 20 minutes, it’s worth listening to the whole talk).

Cement Tile Spotlight: Barbara Bestor

If the search for Fez cement tiles was what brought you to our website, then chances are we’ve got Barbara Bestor to thank for the referral.  Her use of our Fez concrete tiles in Intelligensia’s Sunset Junction location in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles is still — even seven years later — causing people to whip out their smart phones and take a photo to post to Instagram.  The words that describe the pattern are also words that could be used to describe Bestor: classic, simple and yet thoroughly modern.  Her work elevates simple materials (like cement tiles and plywood) into something bold and iconic.  Some of her other projects include the newly completed Beats by Dre compound in Culver City, Trina Turk in Palm Springs, Claire Vivier, the A+R Store, Stussy, Pitfire Pizza, Lou Wine Bar and Beachwood Cafe in Hollywood, which uses another one of our encaustic tiles, Khufu in mustard and blue — available as an in-stock color — to make a bold, bright statement.

5 Classic Cement Floor Tile Designs

Like your childhood building blocks, cement tiles can be laid out in many ways.  The designs are only limited by your imagination.  Stymied about where to begin?  Here are some of the most popular styles when it comes to laying out concrete tiles.

Patchwork Cement Tile:  At once modern and eclectic, this colorful bohemian style is catching on.  Our best tip to get this style right:  start with two principal colors then add two more colors as your secondary colors.  Sign up in our Portfolio section so you can play around to get your cement design just right.  Find out more about patchwork here.

Checkerboard Cement Tile:  Like the board game, this is a regular pattern of squares in two colors.  Black and white checkerboard is a classic kitchen design.

Hammock

Cobblestone:  Two or more sizes of tile are mixed together.  The encaustic tiles under this gently swaying hammock above, a mix of 12″ Rustico cement tiles and small Toulon and Santa Fe concrete tiles from our Echo Collection, are one example of this pattern.  Find Toulon in our webstore here; find Santa Fe in our webstore here.

Rug:  If you’re looking to create focal points in a room, this layout can help.   A field of cement tile is intercepted with a contrasting concrete tile.  Usually there’s a border around the contrasting encaustic tile.  The result:  a “rug” effect without the mess!  Rug is a popular choice for in front of a fireplace, in front of a bathtub, and at the front door.  In fact, it works any place you might use an actual rug.  In a large room, it can also help to define areas making the space feel cozier.

Bohemian-Modern-Design-9

Wall to Wall: As its name suggests, in this layout one type of concrete tile covers an entire room.  This is a great choice that can be used to tie a room together.  A border tile is sometimes used to define the perimeter of a room.   Here a vast expanse of Khufu tiles in blue and yellow ties together the different seating areas in Los Angeles’ Beachwood Cafe.  Find Khufu in our webstore here.
