7 Reasons Why Your Business Needs Commercial Floor Tiles

Commercial Floor Tiles

Commercial spaces often face the challenge of wanting to appear stylish and unique compared to competitors, while involving the practicality of being able to accommodate heavy usage. When it comes to the flooring, a few basic materials come to mind, such as laminate flooring and vinyl tiles. But those options often sacrifice one important quality for another, like beauty for cost, and durability for perceived value. There is one material, however, that combines these two important principles beautifully, and that is cement floor tile.

What Are Commercial Cement Floor Tiles?

Cement tiles are a type of hard floor tile that are very different from ceramic tiles. Unlike ceramic tiles, cement tiles are not made with clay and aren’t fired in a kiln. They are made from a mixture of cement, sand, color pigments, and powdered minerals that is poured into decorative molds and compressed with about 2,000 pounds of pressure. The mixture combined with the manufacturing process results in a tile that is extremely hard-wearing and resilient to wear and tear.

Cement floor tiles might be the perfect flooring material for your commercial space, whether it be a restaurant, boutique, hotel, resort, café, office building, or even a hospital. Keep reading to learn of the many benefits of cement tiles for your business.

The Benefits of Cement Tiles for Commercial Spaces:

  1. They are Exceptionally Stylish

Cement tiles offer a nearly infinite range of colors, patterns, textures, and designs. They are one of the most versatile and customizable materials on the market. Whereas many buyers choose cement tiles for their kitchen backsplash or for a decorative wall feature, cement tiles are just as suitable for the floor, and can turn the floor of your commercial space into a focal point in and of itself. Popular cement flooring ideas include geometric designs, mosaic and floral patterns, and culturally-inspired designs in black and white and virtually any color you can imagine.

  1. They are Easy to Remove and Update

For restaurants, hotels, shops, cafes, and other commercial spaces that need to update their appearance fairly regularly to keep up with trends and remain updated, fresh, and attractive, commercial cement floor tiles are easy to remove and re-install with either new tiles in the same pattern, or an entirely new look. On the other hand, hardwoods or poured concrete flooring can be a costly nightmare to remove and replace, and repair worn out areas.

  1. They are Durable

Backed by a fortifying mixture of cement, sand and aggregate, cement tiles offer unmatched durability against heavy traffic and regular usage. Unlike other flooring materials like ceramic tiles and hardwoods, cement tiles won’t wear out or fade with time or lots of foot traffic.

  1. They are Resistant

Water resistant floors are a must-have for restaurants and cafes. But even for commercial spaces that don’t typically view water as a constant issue, cement tiles can combat water damage and the issues that come with it including cracks, and mold and mildew growth.

  1. They can Withstand Heavy Foot Traffic

With a busy commercial space, heavy foot traffic is a positive thing, but not for floors. Cement tiles can keep up with the demands of a busy commercial business. Lots of wear and tear typically wear off the color and veneer of other materials, but since the coloring of cement tiles is not on the surface of the tile, it’s not worn off or faded easily by heavy traffic, vehicles, or direct sunlight.

  1. They are Scratch-Resistant

Scratch-resistant floors are particularly appreciated by homeowners with pets but commercial business owners can also benefit from scratch-resistant cement floor tiles. Whether you own a pet grooming business, a pet daycare center, or a busy restaurant or retail boutique, cement tiles can prevent shoes, carts, clothing racks, and luggage from scratching your lovely patterned floors.

  1. They are Easy to Maintain

Besides style and durability, commercial owners look at maintenance and cost as the other most important factors for floors. Cement floor tiles are very low maintenance and easy to keep clean. Their durability ensures repairs and replacements are infrequent over time, and their sleek surface makes cleaning dirt, water, and dust a simple task. You can save time and money both in the immediate and long-term with cement floor tiles.

Cement floor tiles deliver the best of both worlds for commercial spaces; they offer unmatched style that speaks to the brand of the business or organization, and exceptional durability that will keep them looking great for a long time.

For most of the world, Bilbao has become synonymous with Frank Gehry’s fantastical museum of the same name. in the city of the same name in Spain.  (Fun fact for any Tolkein fans out there: in Basque, the city’s name is Bilbo, the first name of the reluctantly brave Hobbit in The Hobbit)  Because of its many swoops and swerves, this historic cement tile pattern reminded us of Bilbao.

Pictured is the stock concrete tile colorway, of mustard, while black and grey, available in our Cement Tile Shop but, like all of our encaustic tiles, it can be ordered in custom colors to mix and match your decor!  Here’s how it looks in black, white, gray and blue

Get The Look: Use Granada Tile’s Ronda Cement Tiles For The East Borough Restaurant Look

Granada Cement Tiles Ronda - Restaurant-EastBorough1

East Borough, a hip Vietnamese restaurant in Culver City, has incredible food and incredible cement tiles.  When we took a closer look, we couldn’t help thinking that they look exactly like our Ronda concrete tiles.

Here are our Ronda cement tiles in the standard colorway:

Granada Cement Tiles Ronda - Single Custom Color

While not all of the cement tiles we see in restaurants, coffee shops and homes are our concrete tiles, Granada Tiles carries many of the classic tile patterns found around the world.  Plus, we’re always adding to our collection of concrete tile designs (Have you checked out our latest collection, the Erin Adam Group?).  With 32 colors and over 140 tile designs to choose from, Granada Tile has the perfect design to enhance the room or restaurant of your dreams.  And, if we don’t carry the particular encaustic tile design that you’re searching for, we’re happy to create a custom pattern for you or help you to match the colors in a design that you saw. Just send us a photograph or a screenshot.

And, while there are other cement tile shops who sell tiles in designs that are similar to ours, don’t be fooled into thinking that just because they look the same that they are the same.  Our concrete tiles are handmade in an environmentally conscientious manner.  Our cement tiles are carefully inspected so that each cement tile is the same thickness, so that your floor will be smooth and level.  Our top color layer is thicker and we use marble dust in the color layer of our encaustic tiles which gives them a subtle luster that gleams in comparison to the average concrete tile.

Just look at how the complex octahedron shape of Ronda and its 6 colors transform this simple restaurant, balancing the complex mural of street life on the far wall, the pops of color from the chairs at the lunch counter and the playful assortment of white lights hanging overhead.  The space is a party for the eyes (and the wonderful food is a party for the tastebuds!).

Behind The Cement Tile: Granada Tile’s Santander Concrete Tile

HorseThiefBBQSantander

As regular readers may know, Granada Tile’s global perspective and love of travel means that we like to name our encaustic tile patterns after cities, countries and favorite spots around the world that inspire us.  Case in point, our Santander cement tile.  Located in the north of Spain, the town of Santander was settled early on, though it’s difficult to determine the exact date.  However, it’s likely that the bay, sheltered from storms and winds, a source of water and power and a good point from which to spot potential enemies, was the origin point.  This seashore, with its wide swaths of changing color due to the shifting patterns of waves and calm, wet sand and dry sand became the inspiration for our concrete tile pattern.  The four simple parallel lines of these Santander encaustic tiles echo that pattern.

Depending on how these cement tiles are laid, Santander concrete tile can take on many guises.  Above, at Horse Thief, a popular barbecue spot in Los Angeles’s Grand Central Marketplace, laying these wall tiles so that the diagonals run one way and then the other, creates a strong geometric presence.

Santander-Kitchen-TimBalonSF2

In another cement tile installation, used as the kitchen tile backsplash in this San Francisco space designed by Tim Balon, it takes on a much wilder, bolder and graphic tone, bringing life to the clean, sleek contemporary kitchen.

And while this concrete tile pattern is shown in black and white, which is available in our cement tile shop, if you’re curious to play with color, it’s a great pattern with which to get creative.

The qualities that make Granada Tile’s cement tiles the perfect choice for a hardworking coffee shop’s cement tile floor or restaurant’s concrete tile floor or a barbecue’s encaustic wall tile — along with their beautiful designs and vivid colors, our concrete tile is long lasting, easy care and low maintenance — are the same ones make it perfect for your tile project, whether used as kitchen floor tile, kitchen backsplash tile or wall tile, bathroom tile, shower tile, patio tile or laundry room tile.  Start by visiting our cement tile shop to peruse our large selection of in-stock handmade master-crafted cement tiles and call us today at 213-482-8070 to discuss which of our encaustic tile designs would be perfect for your home or restaurant project.

Consider Granada Tile Nara Cement Tiles For A Graphic Kitchen Tile Backsplash

Nara-Kitchen-DesignVidal2

Although you may have found us through some of our more well-known cement tile designs, like our geometric Fez concrete tiles, when it comes to choosing the encaustic tiles that will work for your concrete tile installation project, we have many different cement tile patterns to choose from.

20131126141914ECHO_Collection-8x8_Decos-Nara_877_Ath-4

For example, if you’re looking to bring a bit of retro styling to your midcentury kitchen with an updated kitchen backsplash, Nara encaustic tiles might be an option. Nara’s concrete tile pattern is based on 200-year-old embroidery patterns from Japan, known as sashiko.  Sashiko is a type of folk embroidery that creates geometrically patterned backgrounds of curved or straight lines.  In fact, the word sashiko literally means “little stabs”—a nod to the very small stitches employed in creating the artful needlework.  Though the source material might be centuries old, the cement tile designs seem anything but. Instead they are bold, lively, and thoroughly modern, at home in a variety of tile installations from concrete wall tiles in a bathroom to cement backsplash tiles in a kitchen. Depending on the colors chosen for your encaustic tile palette, the design can be either muted or played-up, depending on the role you want your cement tiles to have in your concrete tile installation.

Granada Tile Minis Cement Tile Collection: Small But Mighty

StarCross-Bathroom-Staged

Have you checked out our Minis collection of cement tiles?   The Granada Tile Mini cement tile collection was inspired by the zellige ceramic tile patterns of Morocco, which sprang to life in the 10th century and seem to cover every surface that country.  Our Minis cement tile collection recreates these classic and timeless designs with one key and important difference: our interpretation uses concrete instead of the original ceramic.  Concrete makes these tiles stronger and less likely to chip, offering superior durability. They’re also a more eco-friendly choice, since the cement tiles are air-cured rather than kiln-fired (no thick, choking smoke from our production process to pollute the environment).  And, when wet, concrete tile is not as slippery as ceramic, making them a safer choice for bathroom tile floor or for a kitchen tile floor.  In fact, we won’t be surprised if you’ll want to use them to cover every surface of your home!

Scale-Bathroom-Staged

Whether your project is a residential or commercial one, Granada Tile’s Minis Collection of concrete tile offers plenty of options.  Like the big sized cement tiles in our encaustic tile collections, the Minis Collection of concrete tiles can be used both inside and outside (except in areas prone to freezing), on floors and on walls. With their undulating, mesmerizing shapes, they bring a dynamic feel to kitchen backsplashes, bathroom floors and walls, and fireplace tile surrounds.  Try the Star Cross cement tile pattern (seen at the top of this post) in a traditional two-toned design, wash a wave of Aqua colored Scale concrete tiles across your shower wall (the second photo) or wake up a kitchen backsplash with playful Kite encaustic tiles in blue and white (see below)

Whether you chose one of the large concrete tiles from our collection or are enchanted with the small size of our Minis encaustic tile Collection, the same qualities that make Granada Tile’s cement tiles the perfect choice for a hardworking coffee shop floor tile or a restaurant tile floor — in addition to their beautiful designs and vivid colors, our concrete tiles are long lasting, easy care and low maintenance — are the same ones that make it perfect for your home, whether used as floor tile or wall tile, kitchen backsplash, shower tile or patio tile.  Start by visiting our cement tile web store to peruse our large selection of in-stock handmade master-crafted cement tiles and call us today at 213-482-8070 to discuss which of our encaustic tile designs would be perfect for your home or restaurant project.

Behind The Cement Tiles: Serengeti

20131126154527ECHO_Collection-In_Stock-Serengeti_913_Ath-4

Welcome to cement tile Tuesday.  We have a tradition here at Granada Tile for naming our cement tiles after the places that they bring to our mind. When we saw the intriguing design of this concrete tile, with its dynamic triangular pattern and its light and dark stripes, it evoked memories of a movie we’d seen in IMAX with its herd of zebras galloping across the vast plains of the Serengeti. The flash of stripes, the energetic charge of the animals as they ran across the desert: we felt that the pattern of this tile conveyed that same vitality.

In black and cream, our standard colorway, these cement tiles brings to mind the colors of African mudcloth; in black and white, as in the home of Fall Out Boy’s guitarist, the concrete tiles takes on a more graphic twist.  You can also order these cement tiles in color combinations suitable for your home or restaurant’s design and decor.

Serengeti-LivingRoom-FallOutBoy2

In this restaurant, laid in a row, it’s almost sedate…

TabernaMexica2

…but you can really get a sense of its dynamism when it’s laid out, as it is here, on a side wall.

While playing with color gives this tile another look completely:

Serengeti-Carpet-Green

Here, with one right angle green, the result is striking but much more classic, reminiscent of a pattern from the 30s.

Behind The Cement Tile: Fez

main.original.585x0-1

Where do we start to talk about the magic that is our Fez cement tile?  Since its splashy debut into the public’s consciousness eight years ago, courtesy of Los Angeles architect extraordinaire Barbara Bestor, at Silver Lake’s Intelligensia Cafe, one of the city’s most popular coffee shops, these concrete tiles, in our standard blue and white colorway, have captured the imagination of architects, designers and tastemakers from coast to coast.  The simple graphic look of these cement tiles is at once modern and exotic; this concrete tile design works just as well in a traditional setting as it does in a contemporary space.

This cement tile design comes from historic molds made of cast bronze that were purchased in the early days of Granada Tile’s existence.  Because of its classic Moroccan feel, we decided to christen this concrete tile design after that country’s pre-eminent city for artisans.  In blue and white, this cement tile pattern also bears a whiff of Greece and the Greek islands, bringing to mind that land’s ancient oceanside villages, the calming blue of the summer sea contrasting with the stark whitewashed homes.  Whatever warm land this cement tile evokes for you, here are some examples of how this cement tile pattern adapts to different spaces — kitchen backsplash tile, outdoor deck tile, bathroom floor tile, shower tiles, stair tile, patio tile — and shows off its hardworking, durable, modern and timeless qualities.
