Granada Tile Cement Tile At The Cape, A Thompson Hotel, in Cabo

Just say the word Cabo to us these last few weeks and we’ll say YES!  Even usually sunny and warm Los Angeles, one of our ports of call, has been cold and damp.  So we have to say we’re jealous of our Buniel cement tileScreen Shot 2016-02-02 at 3.52.31 PMIt can be found throughout The Cape, a Thompson Hotel in Cabo, basking in the warm glow of the Caribbean sun. The white, teal and mist concrete tile not only echoes the beautiful blues of the sea but — one of the secrets of concrete tile floors — feels soft as velvet on your feet (And did you also know that, because of encaustic tile’s properties, they’re less likely to be slippery when wet. That’s because concrete tiles are porous so they absorb water.)

Behind The Tile: Burgos

20131126130440ECHO_Collection-8x8_Decos-Burgos_915_Ath-4 We’ve talked about the versatility of Burgos.  But what’s the history of this adaptable cement tile pattern?  While it would not be surprising — given the design’s graphic, contemporary feel — to discover that it was a concrete tile design that we’d created in the past few years, it’s actually one of the historic cast bronze molds that we acquired early on.  We were drawn to the way it suggests influences from Spain, France and Italy as well as its ability to morph from an Escher-like pattern of steps to a simple repeat of four pointed stars to a complex arrangement of geometric shapes depending on how it’s laid.  Not surprisingly, we’ve discovered that our clients are also intrigued by the possibilities of this encaustic tile design.  It often inspires them to merge the different patterns into a mellifluous whole.  The name was chosen to reflect this cement tile’s blend of past and present.  Burgos, the town in Northern Spain after which this concrete tile in named, includes this same confluence of past and present —  a 12th century monastery coexists with the very modern Museum of Evolution — a juxtaposition that makes this place, and this encaustic tile, a paean to the timelessness of true beauty.

Cement Tile Designs: The Possibilities Are Endless

1

Which of the three cement tile designs above do you like best?  Whichever one you said — left, right or center — here’s a secret: they’re all made with the same concrete tile!

Like the perfect black dress, the beauty of our cement tile designs is their ability to morph from classic to casual to modern or traditional depending on which way they’re oriented.  Using the same encaustic tile you can lay a floor (or a wall or a backsplash) in a myriad of different designs.  For example, instead of using a pile of different cement tiles to create the patchwork tile designs that are popular right now, you can use the same tile, laid slightly differently across your space, to conjure up a tile pattern that, while still emulating this trend, might feel a little more zen in your moderately-sized, real world home.

With this fact in mind, you can also create a tile design with a beautiful border, a central focal point or, using the same cement tile laid in a different directions, create different, yet still coherent patterns throughout your home.

To get a similar look in your home to any of the tile designs above, use our Burgos concrete tile from our Echo Collection and custom order the concrete tile in white, black and silver.

Get The Look: Los Angeles’ Republique Restaurant and Burgos Cement Tile

slideshow_std_h_Republique-in-Hancock-Park

Los Angeles’s LaBrea Avenue is bursting with new places to see and be seen.  One of the newest places for breakfast (and lunch and dinner and drinks) is also one of its oldest and most iconic spaces:  Republique at 624 LaBrea Avenue, between Wilshire Boulevard and 6th Street.  Walter Manzke is not only the chef, he’s also the brains behind the design of the restaurant.

Legend has it that the space — with its gothic arches and flamboyant blue and yellow Spanish mosaic tile water fountain — began life as Charlie Chaplin’s office.  And, for 23 years, it was the home of Campanile, one of the places where, under the guiding hand of Chef Mark Peel, California’s farm-to-table cuisine got its start.  It was also the birthplace of Nancy Silverton’s LaBrea Bakery, one of the first bakeries to bring artisianal bread to Los Angeles.

So when Manzke took over, he walked into a space rich with history.  With most of the renovation money going into upgrades you can’t see — drains, pipes and vents — he had to be resourceful.  Turning to friends and family, he wove the look of the restaurant from bits and pieces of Campanile, the Phillippines (where Manzke has two restaurants) and family construction projects.  The wrought iron chandeliers were designed by one friend, the brass that fronts the bar was salvaged from another friend and the copper hanging lights in the front room are created from old pipes from Campanile’s plumbing.

Of course, being a cement tile company, we were immediately drawn to that beautiful concrete tile floor.  While Manzke, who owns two restaurants in the Phillipines carted in the 5000 cement tiles from there, we couldn’t help but notice that they look very much like our own Burgos tiles.  In fact, they’re so similar they could almost be identical!  We love how the geometric, architectural design balances out the space’s industrial feel and how the black, green and cream pattern warms up the cavernous space.  Not to mention that they’re perfect for a restaurant space — easy care, low maintenance, long wearing and environmentally friendly!

Checking In: What’s Been Happening on Share Designs This Month

As we like to do every month, we’re bringing you a selection of some of the Echo Collection cement tile designs on Granada Tile‘s Share Designs site that we found most intriguing this month. It should come as no surprise to long-time readers that we’re, as ever, amazed by the creativity to be found on the site.

Tangier happens to be one of our more elaborate concrete tile designs—a riot of pattern and color that evokes its namesake city. Skot O’Mahoney transformed Tangier into a study in earth tones, which we think works marvelously with its strong, complicated cement tile design. Keeping most of the shades on the earthy side of things tempers the complex tile design and makes it a great choice for any number of uses: We think it would shine in a kitchen tile backsplash or look phenomenal installed as floor tiles in the entryway of a Spanish Style house.

Here’s another concrete tile design that really intrigued us—and stands in contrast to Tangier. Usually our Burgos tile design lends itself to a complex, M. C. Escher–like tile installation of three-dimensional cubes. Intriguingly, though, one of our users, Nadia Yaron, came up with a really subtle and remarkable take on the pattern. Instead of going for three shades, she opted for just two shades—white and gray—for a look best described as understated. Using our layout tool, we took her tile design and created a tile installation in a simple diaper pattern.

Keep checking in for more tile designs and don’t forget to share your own cement tile designs on Share Designs. Your idea could inspire some else’s tile installation. And, of course, stay tuned for a lot more beautiful tile designs in the new year.
