Like your childhood building blocks, cement tiles can be laid out in many ways.  The designs are only limited by your imagination.  Stymied about where to begin?  Here are some of the most popular styles when it comes to laying out concrete tiles. Patchwork Cement Tile:  At once modern and eclectic, this colorful bohemian style is catching on.  Our best tip to get this style right:  start with two principal colors then add two more colors as your secondary colors.  Sign up in our Portfolio section so you can play around to get your cement design just right.  Checkerboard Cement Tile:  Like the board game, this is a regular pattern of squares in two colors.  Black and white checkerboard is a classic kitchen design.

Cobblestone:  Two or more sizes of tile are mixed together.  The encaustic tiles under this gently swaying hammock above, a mix of 12″ Rustico cement tiles and small Toulon and Santa Fe concrete tiles from our Echo Collection, are one example of this pattern.

Rug:  If you’re looking to create focal points in a room, this layout can help.   A field of cement tile is intercepted with a contrasting concrete tile.  Usually there’s a border around the contrasting encaustic tile.  The result:  a “rug” effect without the mess!  Rug is a popular choice for in front of a fireplace, in front of a bathtub, and at the front door.  In fact, it works any place you might use an actual rug.  In a large room, it can also help to define areas making the space feel cozier.

Wall to Wall: As its name suggests, in this layout one type of concrete tile covers an entire room.  This is a great choice that can be used to tie a room together.  A border tile is sometimes used to define the perimeter of a room.   Here a vast expanse of Khufu tiles in blue and yellow ties together the different seating areas in Los Angeles’ Beachwood Cafe.  Find Khufu in our webstore here. The same qualities that make our cement tiles perfect for a hardworking coffee shop or restaurant space — in addition to their beautiful designs and vivid colors, our concrete tiles are long lasting, easy care and low maintenance — make it perfect for your home, whether used as floor tile or wall tile.  Call us today at 213-482-8070 to discuss which of our encaustic tile designs would be perfect for your home or restaurant project.
